GSJ Performs at Noe Valley Ministry

Noe Valley Ministry – Music and Dance of Bali
Tickets: $ 15 Advance / $17 at the door.
For tickets, call (415) 454-5238 or visit Streetlight Records in SF, or Downhome Music in El Cerrito.

Gamelan Sekar Jaya, the Bay Area’s acclaimed gamelan ensemble, present the interlocking rhythms and refined dances of Bali in a special presentation, recreating the traditional “kalangan” stage arrangement used in Balinese village settings. Led by one of Bali’s most brilliant artists, Dewa Ketut Alit Adnyana (guest music director) from the famed Cudamani ensemble, Sekar Jaya will feature two large percussion orchestras — the bronze gamelan gong kebyar, and four-tone ceremonial orchestra, gamelan angklung — as well as the delicate music of the gender wayang, a quartet that usually accompanies the shadow puppet play.

Also featured will be guest dancer Kompiang Metri-Davies, from the dance ensemble Gadung Kasturi, who will perform the ground-breaking early 20th-century piece, Kebyar Duduk.

The kalangan arrangement reflects the open-air settings used in traditional Balinese contexts, where groups often play within or in front of temple courtyards. The audience is welcomed to enjoy the performance from various sides and perspectives, to enjoy the rich metallic sonority and tight-knit ensemble sensibility of Balinese gamelan, and the myriad expressions and delicate hand and eye motions of Balinese dance.
