Wayne Vitale is a composer, performer, and scholar who has devoted his life to Balinese gamelan music and cross-cultural exchange. He has spent more than six years in Bali, supported in part by a Fellowship for Independent Scholars from the National Endowment for the Humanities. His compositions for gamelan are known throughout Bali through live performances, cassette recordings, and television programs, and have impacted the evolution of Balinese kebyar music. He owns a recording label, Vital Records , that has released critically acclaimed CDs of Balinese music; has taught Balinese music at several universities on the West Coast; and has also devoted himself to the metallic art of gamelan tuning, traveling throughout the United States and Europe to tune and restore Balinese instruments.
