Students learn the most fundamental movement vocabulary for Balinese dance through the study of pieces created by master teachers. Develop your strength and flexibility through this art form that is both performative and meditative.
Gamelan Gong Kebyar
Hands-on experience playing in a gamelan gong kebyar ensemble—the most prevalent type of orchestra in Bali. The music of this five-tone ensemble is rich and energetic in style with complex interlocking melodies. The first class will be an introduction to the instruments and the music, and the way the ensemble functions as a whole. The second through forth classes will focus more intensively on the interlocking playing technique known as kotekan, played on the gangsa instruments, that is integral to the sound of Balinese gamelan.
