July 15th - Jegog at Ethnic Dance Festival Outdoor Pre-Concert

Gamelan Sekar Jaya presents three instrumental works for gamelan jegog, one of Bali’s largest and rarest ensembles, featuring bamboo marimbas with tubes up to ten feet long. Emanating from West Bali, jegog is noted for its rhythmic energy, unusual four-tone scale, and powerful sonority—its bass tones can be heard for miles across rice fields. Performers begin with Teruntungan Bebek Putih, a traditional work originating from Sangkaragung (arranged by I Gede Oka) to summon the gods and audience while “warming up the bamboo.” Next, a new composition by I Dewa Putu Berata Lembu Ireng harnesses the spirit of Bali’s mighty water buffalo. The final work Jarun Dauh is a classic composed by Pak Ridia (refined by Wayan Gama Astawa and I Made Terip) named after the horse used in battle by the Balinese king Raden Pata—a fitting image for the work’s dazzling array of musical techniques and unbridled energy.

Jegog will perform on the SF Opera House steps shortly before the Ethnic Dance Festival's indoor programming begins, on
