I Wayan Gama Astawa is the Director of Sanggar Adi Gama and hails from Jembrana, Bali. A graduate of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, he is one of Bali’s most highly regarded experts in West Bali’s gamelan jegog, a powerful form of bamboo music known for its unique rhythmic patterns and powerful sonority. Son of renowned jegog expert I Nengah Selen, Astawa is well established as one of Jembrana’s most active composers. In 1985 he founded a performing ensemble organization Sekaa Jegog Putra Ardana Kusuma, and has since been recognized by the governor of Bali for his composition and work with youth at the Bali Arts Festival.
 
Gama Astawa is known for his musical accomplishments, his performing charisma and highly energetic teaching style, and his unwavering dedication to building community and perpetuating the gamelan jegog art form.  He has taught students of gamelan from all over the world, including Gamelan Sekar Jaya during their 2014 tour to Bali. This will be his first U.S. performing residency.
