Maze Daiko is a resident music ensemble at Rhythmix that mixes (mazeru) Japanese taiko (daiko) with West African drums, marimba, Persian santur and European violin, creating a unique world fusion sound. The concert will include repertoire favorites, new compositions and a collaborative work with their special guests.

Because the same waters wash upon the shores of both Japan and Bali, the new work entitled Island to Island, asks the question “where does the land end and the sea begin?” Island to Island commences from the vision that sharing music can bring the global community closer together. Both Maze and GSJ consider their music to be part of a living, continually evolving tradition. The project’s compositional process will include experimentation with the musical traditions of these cultures that share tales of the sea. More information about Maze Daiko here.

Rhythmix Cultural Works is committed to presenting a roster of performers that reflect the rich heritage and ethnic diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. The Island Arts Concert series features contemporary interpretations of global musical traditions originating with island cultures. In support of this vision, “Celebrating Diversity on the Island” is the theme for the 2017 series, presenting guest artists who are reinventing and preserving the traditions of their respective musical forms, while also pushing the boundaries through distinctive cross-cultural collaborations.

This concert is made possible in part with funding from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Zellerbach Family Foundation.
