In this six-week series of online classes, master dancer and GSJ Artist-In-Residence, Shoko Yamamuro, will focus on the movement vocabulary of Balinese dance. Students will be introduced to the basic movements and choreography of the traditional Balinese dance, Baris. This male-style dance is often the first dance learned by young Balinese children, and is known for its powerful and imposing stance.
All ages and genders welcome. Students under the age of 18 must submit a parental release form, and those under the age of 11 must have parental supervision.

Shoko Yamamuro joins Gamelan Sekar Jaya as the Fall 2020 Guest Dance Director. Shoko began her studies of Balinese dance as a child while living with her family in Jakarta, Indonesia. After college, she received a scholarship from the Indonesian government to enter ISI, the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, in Denpasar. She is one of few international artists to have extensive knowledge of both male and female styles. Her principle dance teachers are Jero Made Puspawati, I Made Bukel (alm), I Made Keranca and Gusti Agung Susilawati. With over 30 years of dance experience, she has taught and performed throughout the US, Canada and Japan, including performances for the Indonesian president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and over 20 appearance at the annual Bali Arts Festival.
