In this series of one-hour online classes, Balinese master musician and GSJ Remote Teaching Fellow Ida Bagus Made Widnyana will teach the basics of Balinese bamboo flute, suling. Beginning students will be introduced to basic techniques and melodies on this versatile and virtuosic instrument. Prior training in Balinese music is not required, but the class may be difficult for students who have never played any type of instrument, and those with very small hands.
Ages 12 and up welcome. Students under the age of 18 must submit a parental release form.
Handmade instruments from master craftsman I Wayan Cover in Pengosekan, Bali, are available at www.gsj.org/shop for local pickup or USPS shipping within the U.S. Registered students receive a 15% discount on instrument purchase. You will receive the discount code via email after registering.
Class size limited to 10 students.
Six Wednesdays, 6:30PM - 7:30PM Pacific, May 5 to June 9.
All sessions will be recorded and shared with participants along with any other study materials such as notation or fingering charts.
