In this six-week series of in-person classes, master dancer and GSJ Guest Dance Director Shoko Yamamuro will focus on the movement vocabulary of Balinese dance. Students will be introduced to the basic movements and choreography of the traditional Balinese dance in male and female styles.
Students of all genders are welcomed; students must be at least 12 years old. While this is an invaluable class for experienced musicians and dancers, no previous dance or music experience is required!

All class participants are required to be fully vaccinated and to wear masks while inside the GSJ banjar community center.

Shoko Yamamuro joins Gamelan Sekar Jaya as the Fall 2021 Guest Dance Director. Shoko began her studies of Balinese dance as a child while living with her family in Jakarta, Indonesia. After college, she received a scholarship from the Indonesian government to enter ISI, the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, in Denpasar. She is one of few international artists to have extensive knowledge of both male and female styles. Her principal dance teachers are Jero Made Puspawati, I Made Bukel (alm), I Made Keranca and Gusti Agung Susilawati. With over 30 years of dance experience, she has taught and performed throughout the US, Canada and Japan, including performances for former Indonesian president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and over 20 appearances at the annual Bali Arts Festival.
