In this four-week series of in-person classes, former Sekar Jaya Guest Music Director and ensemble member, Shoko Yamamuro will focus on the foundations of Balinese dance. This class is geared towards students who might already have some knowledge of Balinese dance (including previous classes with GSJ or short-term study in Bali), as well as total beginners.
Students of all genders are welcomed; students must be at least 12 years old. All class participants are required to be fully vaccinated and to wear masks while inside the GSJ banjar community center. These classes may sometimes take place outside in the outdoor patio area of the banjar building, depending on the preference of the instructor.
Shoko Yamamuro began her studies of Balinese dance as a child while living with her family in Jakarta, Indonesia. After graduating from the Japan Women's College of Physical Education and studying Balinese dance for over ten years, she received a scholarship from the Indonesian government to enter ISI in Denpasar. During this period she gained a reputation as one of the only foreign students capable of performing both male and female dance styles. Yamamuro now resides permanently in the San Francisco Bay Area and regularly teaches and performs with Gamelan Sekar Jaya. Her son and daughter, ages three and seven, are showing interest in becoming GSJ’s youngest members!
