In this five-week series of in-person classes, Guest Dance Director Shoko Yamamuro will focus on the fundamentals of male style Balinese dance demonstrated through the classic warrior dance Tari Baris.
This class is perfect for both total beginners and students who have already studied Balinese dance, including previous classes with GSJ or short-term study in Bali.
Students of all genders are welcomed; students must be at least 12 years old. These classes may sometimes take place outside in the outdoor patio area of the banjar building, depending on the preference of the instructor.
Shoko Yamamuro began her studies of Balinese dance as a child while living with her family in Jakarta, Indonesia. After graduating from the Japan Women's College of Physical Education and studying Balinese dance for over ten years, she received a scholarship from the Indonesian government to enter ISI in Denpasar. During this period she gained a reputation as one of the only foreign students capable of performing both male and female dance styles. Yamamuro now resides in the San Francisco Bay Area and regularly teaches and performs with Gamelan Sekar Jaya. She also has exposed many students and audiences to Balinese dance in Japan, at Gamelan Gita Asmara in Vancouver, Gamelan Dharma Swara in New York City, and various colleges across the New England region. Last year, she choreographed a new dance work named Pagar Ayu, in collaboration with composer I Gusti Nyoman Darta, a commission for Gamelan Dharma Swara.
