Gamelan Sekar Jaya is excited to share traditional and newly created works for three of its largest and most complex gamelan ensembles in a free outdoor performance at Oakland’s Studio One Art Center Courtyard.
The vibrant and energetic sixteen-person bamboo jegog ensemble with marimbas up to 10-feet long, will be led by composer and performer from Negara, Bali—I Gede Oka Artha Negara. The shimmering, interlocking melodies of the fourteen-member gamelan semar pegulingan ensemble will be led by local ethnomusicologist, musician and performer Pete Steele. And, even with just a four-tone scale, the petite gamelan angklung weaves complex and ear-pleasing higher-pitched melodies under the direction of local experts Katie Harrell and Carla Fabrizio.
These ensembles will accompany Sekar Jaya’s dancers in traditional choreographies led by internationally recognized dancer and teacher Shoko Yamamuro. Bring your friends, family, and a blanket to sit on and enjoy a delightful and inspiring afternoon performance at this welcoming neighborhood community center.
