When Gamelan Sekar Jaya was invited to participate in Bali’s annual Festival of Music and Dance in 1986, they became the first foreigners to perform Balinese music for the Balinese.

Kembali- To Return follows the members of Sekar Jaya from rehearsals in Oakland, through a period of acclimation and exploration in rural Bali, to their performance at the Festival of Music and Dance in the capital city, Denpasar. Through the experiences of the group, Kembali- To Return explores the roots of Balinese music and dance, their roles in religious ceremonies and everyday life, and how modern educational institutions are introducing new ideas into traditional forms.

Balinese audiences appreciated the respect the American musicians showed for Balinese traditions, and responded enthusiastically to the uniquely American twist they gave to their performance.
