CANCELLED Balinese Dance Fundamentals, Level I

In this series of one-hour classes, master dancer and GSJ Artist-In-Residence, Bapak I Made Suteja, will focus on the connection between dance and music in the Balinese tradition and how these two vocabularies work together in performance. Students will learn basic postures and dance cues and how they correlate with traditional Balinese Gamelan. While this is an invaluable class for experienced musicians and dancers, no previous dance or music experience is required. Age 11 and up welcome. 

$100/ 5 sessions, $25 drop-in

Sundays, March 1st - April 5 (no class March 15)
2:30PM- 3:30PM

Class participants are encouraged to dance at an informal sharing session following the final class on April 5.

Bapak I Made Suteja

Bapak I Made Suteja is a master Balinese mask dancer, gamelan gambuh
practitioner, painter, and dedicated teacher from the Sukawati community in Bali,
Indonesia. Suteja graduated from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts. For the last ten years,
he has become well-known throughout Bali as an exceptional artist and
performer. He has been teaching both Balinese and foreign students regularly
for the last ten years, and frequently travels to Europe, the United States, and
Singapore to teach and perform. International students of Balinese dance travel from
far and wide to study intensively with Suteja, as he is an exacting, precise, and
expressive dancer with a far-reaching reputation.
