CANCELLED Gamelan Gong Kebyar Fundamentals, Level I

Named for the 'gong,' or most fundamental instrument, gamelan gong kebyar is the most prevalent form of gamelan music in Bali, performed on an orchestra of bronze-keyed instruments. Gong Kebyar music is known for its virtuosity, acoustic brilliance, with both sudden and gradual contrasts in tempo and dynamics.

In this beginner class series taught by Katie Harrell. students will explore interlocking “kotekan” patterns, mallet technique, expression, and the role of each instrument in the gamelan ensemble. Prior musical training is not required, but students should be able to hum a tune or keep a steady beat. No gamelan experience required. For ages 11 and up!

$100 / 5 sessions, $25 drop-in
Saturdays, February 22nd - March 28th (no class on February, 29, March 14)
10:30AM - 12PM

Class participants are encouraged to play for the beginning dance class students at an informal sharing session on April 5 at 3:30pm!

Katie Harrell

Katie has been a performing member of GSJ since 2013 and is Co-Coordinator of our angklung ensemble. She got her BM in Music Theory and Composition from Stetson University, where she first became interested in the music of gamelan-inspired Western composers. In 2011, Katie moved to Oakland to attend Mills College, where she worked closely with Daniel Schmidt in the study of composing for the college’s resident American gamelan, as well as assisting in the construction of new instruments for the ensemble. In 2015, Katie was awarded a Fulbright scholarship for a year-long study of vocal music in Bali.
