Hari Saraswati or Saraswati Day is a Hindu holiday celebrating Dewi Saraswati, goddess of learning and the arts. On December 16, Gamelan Sekar Jaya will celebrate Hari Saraswati with an open house featuring performances and drop-in beginner workshops free to the public.
The public open house will officially begin at 12:00pm at Gamelan Sekar Jaya’s banjar community center in Berkeley.
SCHEDULE
12:00pm - Open House and Clear-out Sale Begin
We are in the process of clearing out our space of some old Holiday Faire items from previous years. Items will be grouped by price, with most items priced at $5, $10, or $20 - well below their actual value! All proceeds will go to Sekar Jaya's annual fund, which supports our artist salaries, new costumes, instrument repairs, volunteer appreciation, and much more!
1:00pm - Ngayah (Casual Performances in Honor of Hari Saraswati)
Performances by our gender, dance, angklung and jegog ensembles. We plan to perform outside, though we may move inside in case of rain.
2:30pm - Free public workshops
A few of our music ensemble members will be leading free, informal workshops if you're interested in trying out our instruments. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and get a feel for the practice before signing up for a public class.
4:00pm - Closing
Bring a friend, enjoy the show, and explore our music and dance community center as we give thanks for the gifts of art and learning!
