Sudamala at Martin Luther King Junior Civic Center Park

Gamelan Sekar Jaya is pleased to present Sudamala, a new work from internationally acclaimed Balinese-American composer I Dewa Putu Berata. Sudamala is a musical prayer for healing in this global age of sickness. The work explores the Balinese spiritual concept of Tri Hita Karana (divinity, humanity, nature), emphasizing the commonalities and discontinuities of creating and performing with local artists as a Balinese composer in the Bay Area.

Sudamala also features new choreography from Sekar Jaya's 2022 Guest Dance Director Emiko Saraswati Susilo, a new composition for gamelan gong kebyar from Sekar Jaya's 2022 Guest Music Director and artist-in-residence I Dewa Putu Rai, and a guest appearance from Rashidi Omari of Oakland's Destiny Arts. Saturday's program also includes new work from Sekar Jaya's gamelan angklung and gamelan jegog.

4:00pm - Gamelan Jegog (30 minutes)

This event is outdoors and free to the public! There will be seating provided to first come, first served. Refreshments and food can be purchased at the Berkeley Farmers’ Market that will be happening right next to the park. Bring a blanket, grab a cool drink from the farmer's market, and enjoy an afternoon of music and dance with Gamelan Sekar Jaya.
